Meet the Inverted Counsellor

My name is Calee Litteken (she/hers/they/theirs)

Counselling Background & Experience

Growing up in a small town in southern Texas, I saw that many people around me struggled with mental health issues but often had difficulty identifying or coping with what they were experiencing without stigma or shame. I felt drawn to understand and support those who struggled to understand and support themselves. This led me into the raw and beautiful field of counselling.

I've been a counsellor since 2017, working with people of all walks of life, backgrounds, abilities and cultures. Though I am an integrative counsellor, I'm largely person-centred in my stance and at my core. This means I firmly believe that every person I meet is capable of working through their own answers and what works best for them, especially if they are granted a safe space to do so. In counselling, we look at those raw feelings that come up and I support you in listening to what they are trying to tell you and where they're coming from, rather than pushing them down. In doing so, you may grow to understand yourself better and learn how to accept and deal with those feelings in a more meaningful and manageable way.

I am accredited through the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (MBACP, 377749). I completed my core counselling training at the University of North Texas in 2017, emphasizing interests in cognitive behavioural therapy, counselling adolescents and young adults and expressive arts therapy. As a queer therapist that understands identity and relationships can be integral to personal wellness, I am passionate about and trained in issues around gender, sexuality and relationship diversity.

I started supervising in 2024 and am currently undergoing the PCE Supervisor Training in at Nottingham University. I have previously worked with crisis and suicide response teams in Texas, providing intensive case management and counselling in difficult, life-threatening situations. I also worked as a hospital liaison for clients in inpatient settings, helping them transition to life following hospitalisation. I offered counselling voluntarily with the Shakespeare Hospice for 2 years from 2021-2023, providing counselling for those in end of life care and those who faced bereavement. Along side private practice, I've been working as a counsellor for depression in the NHS since 2021.

Circus Arts Background and Experience

I started my aerial and pole fitness journey in 2021. I struggled in consistency with conventional exercise, finding it monotonous and dull. I never pictured or dreamed that I was capable of circus arts until I took my first class in the middle of lockdown on a whim. I fell in love instantly and quickly began to marvel at what my body could do and how I could express myself through movement.

I became a finalist in my first competition in 2023 at IPAAT (International Pole and Aerial Tournament) in aerial hoop and then won first in the instructor aerial hoop category at UKAAP (UK Amateur Aerial and Pole) competition in 2024. I knew I wanted to empower others the way that I had been empowered. I set to work and my current qualifications and trainings are below:

  • Aerial Hoop - Xpert Fitness

  • Advanced Aerial Hoop - Spin City Fitness

  • Aerial Silks - Xpert Fitness

  • Pole 1 & 2 - Xpert Fitness

  • Children's Pole and Aerial Fitness - Xpert Fitness

  • Pre and Post Natal for Pole and Aerial - Xpert Fitness

  • Aerial Bungee - Bungee Fitness Club

  • Flexibility and Flow - Xpert Fitness
